Mini split vs. central air: where each one wins
We sell mini splits, so read this knowing the house bias. But the fastest way to lose a customer is to sell a mini split into a home central air suits better, so here's the comparison we actually use on the phone.
Where central air wins
If your home already has good ductwork and you condition the whole house on one schedule, replacing a central unit is simple and keeps walls bare: one thermostat, no indoor units. New construction designed around ducts can also favor central for purely aesthetic reasons.
Where mini splits win
- No ducts, no duct losses. Ducts through attics and crawl spaces can leak and lose energy you paid for. A mini split delivers conditioned air in the room it's made in, without routing it through a central duct system. Compare the exact equipment's efficiency ratings when choosing between systems.
- Real zoning. Each indoor unit is its own thermostat. The bedroom at 67° for sleep, the living room at 72°, the guest room set differently: individual controls let you choose the temperature for each room.
- Heating included. Status mini splits provide heating and cooling. Check the exact system's heating performance against your climate and home before choosing it.
- Installation reality. Central means duct design and a crew. A pre-charged multi-zone mini split is a weekend of careful DIY plus an electrician's visit for the dedicated circuit, which is exactly the labor line that makes ductless quotes from contractors so startling.
The honest disqualifiers
Mini splits condition rooms, not hallways: a house of many small closed rooms would need an indoor unit in each, and past three zones you should talk to us before assuming ductless is the play. And every indoor unit is visible on a wall; most people stop noticing in a week, but if that's a dealbreaker, it's a dealbreaker.
The decision in one paragraph
Good existing ducts, whole-house-one-temperature habits: keep central. No ducts, uneven temperatures, rooms with different schedules, an addition or garage the ducts never reached, or a heating bill you'd like to zone your way out of: mini split, and two minutes of sizing tells you which one.
