Choosing a mini split

What size mini split do I need?

Per room: a 9,000 BTU (9K) indoor unit covers a small room (up to 400 sq ft), a 12K a medium room (400–600 sq ft) and an 18K a large room (600–800 sq ft). Ceiling height, sun and insulation shift those numbers, which is why we built a sizing calculator: enter your rooms and it recommends a mini split. Between sizes? Ask us; oversizing is the most common (and most expensive) DIY mistake.

What's the difference between the 18K and 27K outdoor units?

The outdoor unit's number is the total capacity it can drive. An 18,000 BTU (18K) outdoor unit runs two smaller indoor units (9K or 12K); a 27,000 BTU (27K) outdoor unit runs bigger two-zone pairings or three zones. If you might finish a third room later, the 27K gives you headroom now: adding a zone later means adding an indoor unit and a line set, not replacing the outdoor unit.

Do Status mini splits heat as well as cool?

Yes. Status mini splits provide both heating and cooling. Heating performance depends on the exact equipment, outdoor temperature and your home. Contact us before ordering if the system will be your primary heat source so we can help you check the right configuration.

What's actually in the box?

Everything the bundle you configure lists: the outdoor unit, your indoor units with built-in Wi-Fi and remotes, any pre-charged line sets you chose, and one install kit per line set (drain hose, wall collar and vinyl wrap tape). The full parts list is on every product page under the specifications.

Why do line sets come in two sizes?

9K and 12K indoor units use 1/4″ × 3/8″ line sets; 18K indoor units use 1/4″ × 1/2″. The product page only offers the right gauge for each zone, so you can't order a mismatch. Measure the routed path from the outdoor unit to each indoor unit, along walls and up and over, not the straight-line distance, and round up.

Installing it yourself

Can I really install this myself?

Yes. Status DIY systems are made for homeowner installation: the line sets come pre-charged with sealed quick-connect fittings, so there's no refrigerant work — no vacuum pump, no gauges. You mount the units, route the line sets and connect the fittings, following the installation manual for your exact system.

The one part to plan is electrical: every mini split needs a dedicated 230 V circuit and an outdoor disconnect. A licensed electrician should wire that piece, as the installation manual and most local codes require. Check your local permit rules before you start; your building department can tell you what applies to your home.

Installing it yourself doesn’t affect coverage: the 8-year limited warranty applies to your own installation done per the instructions and local codes — no HVAC contractor required.

What electrical work is involved?

Every mini split needs its own dedicated 230 V circuit from your panel to an outdoor disconnect box near the outdoor unit. A licensed electrician should wire that circuit, as the installation manual and most local codes require: it's typically a short visit, and everything else stays DIY. Our electrical kit covers the disconnect, whip and wiring at the unit end.

What tools do I need?

A drill with a hole saw (about 3″ for the wall pass-through), a level, adjustable wrenches for the quick-connect fittings, a stud finder and a screwdriver. No refrigerant tools of any kind. The step-by-step list is in our install guide.

What if I get stuck mid-install?

Call the support line. Install calls jump the queue: real HVAC techs, free, for as long as you own the mini split. We'd rather walk you through a fitting than have you guess.

Pre-orders & payment

How do pre-orders work?

You order and check out normally. Shipping expected to begin by November 1, 2026. We email you when your order ships with freight tracking. You can cancel any time before shipment, for any reason, for a full refund, and if the window ever changes we'll tell you promptly.

When am I charged?

In full at checkout: by card, or with a monthly plan if one is offered for your order. Checkout shows exactly what's due before you place the pre-order.

Can I pay monthly?

If a monthly plan is offered for your order, it appears at checkout alongside cards. See how payment works.

Can I change my configuration after ordering?

Any time before shipment: line set lengths, accessories, even swapping mini splits. Reply to your order confirmation or call us and we'll adjust it with no change fee.

Shipping & delivery

How does freight delivery work?

Free freight delivery to your curb. The carrier calls to schedule a window and delivers with a liftgate; you don't need equipment, but plan to move boxes inside (the heaviest single carton is the outdoor unit, up to about 183 lb for the 27K; a hand truck and a second person make it easy).

What should I do at delivery?

Inspect before signing. Count the cartons against the packing list and note any dents or tears on the delivery receipt; photos take a minute and make any freight claim painless. Full details are in our shipping policy.

Warranty & returns

What's the warranty?

Every Status mini split is covered by Status LLC's own 8-year limited warranty: 8 years on the compressor and internal parts and 1 year on the remote, counted from the original installation date. We are the warrantor, so claims are handled by our support team directly. It covers replacement parts for defects in materials or workmanship; labor, shipping of parts and refrigerant are not covered, and it applies to the original owner at the original installation address in the US or Canada.

Installing it yourself doesn’t affect coverage: the 8-year limited warranty applies to your own installation done per the instructions and local codes — no HVAC contractor required. Coverage is subject to the written limited warranty, including its conditions and exclusions: read the full 8-year limited warranty.

How do I register my mini split?

Once it's installed, register your system with your installation date and the serial number from the outdoor unit's rating plate. It takes about two minutes and puts the facts a claim needs on file. Keep your proof of purchase too.

What's the return policy?

Before it ships, cancel any time, for any reason, for a full refund of everything you've paid. Damaged or wrong deliveries are replaced free: note any damage on the delivery receipt and tell us within 48 hours.

After delivery, you can return equipment within 30 days if it's uninstalled and in resalable condition: never installed, mounted, wired or powered, refrigerant circuits still factory-sealed, and in its original packaging. A 15% restocking fee comes off the refund, and return freight is at your expense. Installed equipment, opened line sets and final-sale items can't be returned; once it's installed, the warranty takes over. The details are in our returns & refunds policy.
